      SOLUTION: The polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber comprises a polyvinyl alcohol-based polymer, and copper sulfide nanoparticulates finely dispersed in the polymer and having ≤100 nm average particle diameter, wherein the polyvinyl alcohol-based fiber has continuous convex parts continuing in the fiber axis direction and continuous recessed parts continuing in the fiber axis direction, on the fiber surface by turns.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide sufficient mechanical strength as a separator and improve the retention of an electrolyte by using the separator obtained when a nonwoven fabric made of an aromatic vinyl resin is sulfonated for an alkaline battery. SOLUTION: A nonwoven fabric combounded with an aromatic vinyl resin sulfonated easily is dipped in a sulfonating agent, and it is sulfonated and made hydrophilic. The nonwoven fabric is formed into a double structure by the machining method of a polyolefin resin and the aromatic vinyl resin, e.g. the aromatic vinyl resin is used on the outside and the polyolefin resin is used on the inside. To make the nonwoven fabric hydrophilic, the nonwoven fabric is dipped and reacted in a bathtub kept at the prescribed concentration and temperature while fuming sulfuric acid is supplied, then it is washed with water to remove sulfuric acid, and it is dried to obtain the hydrophilic nonwoven fabric, for example.
