    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface hardening method by which a layer of graphite or the like is formed on the surface of a base material, and further, the surface of the base material formed with the layer is rapidly heated and rapidly cooled to be quenched, thus the concentration of carbon in the surface of the base material is sufficiently increased, and the surface hardness of the steel having a low carbon content can be increased.
      SOLUTION: Graphite powder 5 is scattered over the surface of a base material W made of a steel having a low carbon content, the surface is pressed by a press machine 6, and graphite powder 5 is crazed into the base material W, so as to form a graphite-crazed layer 4. Thereafter, the surface of the base material W with the graphite-crazed layer 4 formed is rapidly heated and rapidly cooled by a laser quenching apparatus. In this way, a white martensite layer 1 having a high carbon concentration is formed on the surface of the base material W, thus its surface hardness is increased.
