    • PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a protective layer which has high adhesive strength to a thin magnetic film and has excellent durability and running property by forming the thin ferromagnetic material film layer, a layer formed by subjecting the surface of said thin film to an oxidation treatment and a coupling agent treatment layer as the protective layer on a non-magnetic substrate.
      CONSTITUTION: The thin ferromagnetic metallic film is formed on the non- magnetic substrate consisting of a polyester film, etc. by orienting the axis of easy magnetization of the thin magnetic film of preferably a Co-Cr alloy consisting essentially of Co in the direction perpendicular to or parallel with the film plane. The surface part of the magnetic film is then oxidized to form the oxide layer and thereafter an org. Si coupling agent, org. Ti coupling agent or org. Zr coupling agent is coated directly or in the form of a soln. of alcohol, freon, etc. on said layer to form the surface protective layer. The exfoliation of the protective layer from the magnetic film is thus obviated as the oxide layer is intervened. The thin film type magnetic recording medium having the excellent lubricity and durability is obtd.
