    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an axial retention system for constraining the axial movement of a machine component having a dovetail 14 in a complementary-shaped dovetail slot 12. SOLUTION: This system includes: a first substantially T-shaped groove 18 formed on a bottom surface of the dovetail slot; a second substantially T-shaped groove 24 formed on a bottom surface of the dovetail, the first and second grooves in alignment when the dovetail is located in the dovetail slot to thereby form a closed periphery substantially T-shaped slot 29 having stems 20, 28 and lateral cross portions 22, 30 at one end of the stem component, wherein the other end of the stem component is opened; and a compressible locking clip 32 adapted for insertion within the substantially T-shaped slot, the locking clip having a pair of oppositely extending lugs 42, 44 receivable at opposite ends of the lateral cross portions 22, 30.
