    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of aligning a liquid crystal film into hybrid or homeotropic (vertical) alignment, without using a special alignment film. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition for forming a liquid crystal film is prepared, by adding a hydrolyzed product (with 2 to 25 polymerization degree) of an alkoxy silane compound having a functional group to a polymerizable liquid crystal compound. The composition is prepared, by hydrolyzing an alkoxy silane compound to obtain a hydrolyzed product, adding the hydrolyzed product to a polymerizable liquid crystal compound and uniformly mixing, or by uniformly mixing an alkoxy silane compound with a polymerizable liquid crystal compound and then hydrolyzing the alkoxy silane compound in the mixture. An optical anisotropic film is obtained, by coating a base film with the above composition, subjecting the composition to nematic alignment and hardening. The aligned state of the liquid crystal is preferably nematic hybrid alignment or nematic homeotropic (vertical) alignment. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
