    • In order to improve the mechanical Q, an amount of manganese corresponding on a mol. basis to 0.05 to 0.8 wt. per cent of manganese oxide is added to a basic PZT ceramic. The PZT ceramics include all ferroelectric compositions lying within the phase diagram shown. Up to 20 atom per cent Sr, Ca, Mg or Ba may be substituted for Pb. Two preferred basic compositions are described, viz. Pb1- aSra(Zr1- bTib) O3 and Pb1- a Mga(Zr1- bTib)O3 where A is from 0 to 0.15 in the first composition and from 0 to 0.10 in the second, the value of B being from 0.40 to 0.65 in both compositions. A number of compositions lying within these ranges and containing quantities of Mn within the range defined are given. Some of these also contain Cr or U in a quantity corresponding on a mol. basis to 0.1 to 1.5 wt. per cent of chromic oxide and some contain Fe in a quantity corresponding on a mol. basis to 0.1 to 1.0 wt. per cent of ferric oxide. The basic compositions (together with additives) are pre-sintered at 950 DEG C. for 2 hours and then milled, after which MnO2 or KMnO4 is added. The final composition is then moulded and fired.
