    • PURPOSE:To prepare optical fiber for preserving plane of polarization having a large effect on the preservation of plane of polarization by a simple process, by using a quartz tube having an elliptic shape of vertical cross section, by piling locally a glass film on the inner wall of part in the direction of the major axis of the ellipsis. CONSTITUTION:In a method for preparing optical fiber wherein a glass film is piled on the inner wall of a quartz tube, the quartz tube having the inner wall with the piled glass film is filled with a material to give a parent material for optical fiber, and the parent material for optical fiber is drawn under heating, the quartz tube 1 having an elliptic shape of the inner wall of the tube of the cross section perpendicular to the central axis is used as a starting material, and the glass film 2 is locally piled on the inner wall in the direction of the major axis of the quartz tube 1, to give optical fiber for preserving plane of polarization. This optical fiber has a transmission loss value of light at 0.8mum band about 1/10 that of a conventional optical fiber of elliptic core, and it is prepared by a fewer processes than optical fiber which is produced by complicated processes than optical fiber which is produced by complicated processes such as cutting and polishing of unhomogenous glass material wherein the effect on the preservation of plane of polarization and the transmission loss have the same degree, its application to a glass material, etc.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of working a glass tube by which the glass tube having uniform thickness, diameter and characteristics is obtained in a working process of the glass tube including a stage for heating the glass tube by a heating source relatively moving to the glass tube.
      SOLUTION: In the working method of the glass tube for heating to work a part of the glass tube by the heating source moving relatively to the glass tube in the axial direction of glass tube, the diameter and the surface temperature of the glass tube are measured in a plurality of measurement points including softened part of the glass tube by being heated and the inner pressure of the glass tube is adjusted so that a value obtained by multiplying the difference of the diameter between the measured diameter and the set diameter in each measurement point or the difference of the diameter between the measured diameter in each measurement point and the outside diameter of the softened part of the glass tube in the approximate shape by the viscosity of the glass determined from the temperature in the point as a weight and adding the obtained values so as to become zero.
