    • PURPOSE:To improve the quality and yield of a billet by controlling the opening degree of a sliding nozzle in accordance with the time change value of the weight of the molten metal to be poured into a small tundish then adjusting the drawing speed, etc. of a casting machine. CONSTITUTION:A load cell 14 is disposed to a small tundish 5 and the weight of the molten metal 2 poured from a large tundish 4 into said tundish is measured. The opening degree of the sliding nozzle 6 is controlled in accordance with the time change rate thereof. The approach operation of a belt type caster 12 is started upon calculation of the pouring rate after the control. The drawing speed of the caster 12 is adjusted to the prescribed speed at the point of the time when the integrated charging rate determined fro the pouring rate of the molten metal 2 and the amt. of the molten metal in the tundish 5 and the integrated drawing rate coindice with each other. The drawing speed of the caster 12 and the molten metal level thereof are made coincident with target values with high accuracy by the above-mentioned method, by which the stable casting is made possible. The quality and yield of the billet are thus improved.
