    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a titanium oxide film capable not only of forming a titanium oxide film on the surface of a substrate without requiring a heating process but also of controlling the film thickness.SOLUTION: In Step 0, ultraviolet rays are applied onto the surface of a molding consisting of a cycloolefin resin (substrate W) within an air atmosphere. As a result, olefin rings are cleaved, and oxygen within the atmosphere is introduced into cleaved sites. In Step 1, the substrate W is immersed within a liquid mixture of an aqueous titanium chloride solution and a nitrite ion-containing aqueous solution. As a result of this immersion, the oxidation of titanium ions, the coupling of the oxidized titanium ions with oxygen, and the coupling of the coupled oxygen with titanium ions are repeated at cleaved terminals of olefin rings of the cycloolefin molding, resulting in the growth of a titanium oxide film. In Step 2, the reaction is terminated by drawing up the substrate W from the liquid mixture and then washing the same. The film thickness can be controlled by controlling the immersion time. In Step 3, the washed substrate is dried at normal temperature.
