摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a thermally recordable material which is free from a background fog, develops a color in black and preserves an image in extremely good condition by adding a specific phthalide chemical compound to a thermal layer containing a specific fluoran as a coloring agent. CONSTITUTION:This thermally recordable material, using colorless or pale leuco dye as a coloring agent, is thermally allowed to come into contact with a developer to develop a color. A phthalide expressed by formula 1 is added to a thermal layer containing a fluoran expressed by formula 1 as a coloring agent. The phthalide of formula 2 does not develop a color, if coming into contact with the developer, but said chemical compound becomes colored thermally in the presence of the developer. Therefore, a background fog which tends to occur, if two different types of coloring agent are mixed, does not result. When adding the chemical compound expressed by formula 2 to the thermal layer, each component is crushed and mixed, then the mixture can be applied to an area under or on the thermal layer as another step. In addition, the addition amount is not necessarily limited particularly and can be selected appropriately within a range of 5 to 100% against the chemical compound of formula 1.

CONSTITUTION:The production process for the objective compound comprises (A) (i) the reaction of 2-(4'-dibutylamino-2'-hydroxybnezoyl)-benzoic acid with 4-methoxy-2-methyldiphenylamine in higher than 95% concentrated sulfuric acid at 0 to 30 deg.C, (ii) filtration of the phthalide precipitate formed, when the reaction mixture is poured into water, (B) ring closure reaction of the phthalide in a mixture of an organic solvent mixture of monochloro-or o-dichlorobenzene and tetrachlorethylene (in an amount of 50 to 200vol.%) with aqueous sodium hydroxide at 80 to 100 deg.C and (C) separation into the aqueous phase and the organic phase and heat treatment of the organic phase at 70 to 150 deg.C for 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Preferably a phase transfer catalyst such as polyglycol is added to the two-phase base. For example, 3-diethylamino-7-aminofluoran is used as the compound shown by formula I.

摘要： PURPOSE:To enhance background light fastness, by using 2-anilino-3-methyl-6-N- ethylhexylaminofluorane having a specific m.p. as a leuco dye. CONSTITUTION:As a leuco dye, 2-anilino-3-methyl-6-N-ethylhexylaminofluorane having m.p. of 155-157 deg.C characterized by an X-ray diffraction pattern showing a strong peak at diffraction angles (theta) of 11.8 deg., 12.4 deg., 16.1 deg., 21.6 deg., 21.8 deg. in an X-ray diffraction method due to Cu-Kalpha rays is used. There are two crystal transformations in this compound and background light fastness is different by the difference of said crystal transformations. That is, a crystal (referred to as '-type transformation) with m.p. of 149-151 deg.C obtained by a usual precipitation method makes the light fastenss of thermal recording paper inferior and a crystal (referred to as beta-type transformation) with m.p. of 155-157 deg.C precipitated in a reduced amount of a solvent at high temp. imparts good background light fastness.
