    • PURPOSE: To suppress the deterioration of mechanical characteristics at the time of use at a high temp. in an oxygen contg. atmosphere by incorporating specified inorg. fibers and a ceramic matrix. CONSTITUTION: Commercially available silicon carbide fibers are heated at 1,200-1,500 deg.C in a CO atmosphere to obtain a reinforcing material made of inorg. fibers each consisting of an inner layer, a 1st surface layer part formed in the surface of the fiber and a 2nd surface layer part formed between the inner layer and the 1st surface layer part. The compsn. of the inner layer consists of 40-60wt.% Si, 20-40wt.% C and 0.1-3wt.% O. The C content of the 2nd surface layer part is higher than that of the inner layer by >=5wt.% and the total C content is =5wt.% and the total O content is >=60wt.%. The reinforcing material is blended with a ceramic matrix having 0.1μm to 1mm diameter and an aspect ratio of 1.5-1,000 and the resultant blend is heated at 800-1,500 deg.C in an inert gaseous atmosphere.
