    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a trans-1,4-polybutadiene in high activity by polymerizing butadiene in the presence of a catalyst prepared by impregnating a mixture comprising a vanadium compound, an organometallic compound with a group 1, 2 or 3 metal, and butadiene into a support produced by contact of an inorganic oxide with an alkylaluminum compound. SOLUTION: The organic oxides used are exemplified by silica, alumina, magnesia, titania, zirconia, and calcia. The inorganic oxides are desirably in the form of porous microparticles having a mean particle diameter of 5-150 μm and a specific surface area of 2-800 m2/g and is used after being heat-treated at, say, 100-800 deg.C. It is desirable that the contact of the inorganic oxide with the alkylaluminum is performed under substantially anhydrous conditions. The vanadium compounds used are exemplified by vanadium triacetylacetate, vanadium trichloride/THF complex, vanadium oxytrichloride, and vanadium naphthenate. The polymerization method adopted is desirably a gas phase polymerization process.
