    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide signal processing device and method that can efficiently specify the upper limit value of volume level at which no distortion occurs.SOLUTION: A signal processing device has audio signal outputting means 11 for outputting an audio signal, control means 12 for stepwise increasing the volume level of the audio signal, output means 14 for outputting as sounds the audio signal whose sound level has been adjusted, sound collecting means 15 for collecting sounds output from the output means, suppressing means 17 for suppressing an echo component of the audio signal in a sound collection signal collected by the sound collecting means, and detection means 18 for measuring the level of a residual echo component remaining in the suppressed sound collection signal, and detecting discontinuous variation of the level of the echo component on the basis of the variation amount of the residual echo component level between the continuous volume levels. When the discontinuous variation is detected by the detecting means, the control means 12 obtains the volume level just before the detection of the discontinuous variation as the upper limit value of the volume level at which no distortion occurs.
