      SOLUTION: The method for producing the optically active trans-DACH is characterized by adding optically active tartaric acid as a resolving agent to a mixture containing trans-DACH to resolve as a diastereomer salt, adding the enantiomer of the previously used optically active tartaric acid to the obtained crystallization mother liquor as a raw material without removing the optically active tartaric acid, thereby separating the optically active trans-DACH and the optically active tartrate as crystals; and the method for producing cis-DACH is characterized by dropping a mineral acid on the mother liquor to separate the cis-DACH as mineral acid salt crystals.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high purity tartaric acid dialkyl ester having high purity with a high productivity.SOLUTION: The method for producing a high purity tartaric acid dialkyl ester includes (a first purification step) in which an aliphatic alcohol having an alkyl group with carbon atoms of 1-4 is added to an optically active tartaric acid containing 0.1% or more of malic acid and/or fumaric acid, then the resulting mixture is agitated in a solid-liquid two phase system, and thereafter, an optically active tartaric acid is recovered by solid-liquid separation, and (an esterification step) in which the same kind of aliphatic alcohol as the aliphatic alcohol used in the first purification step is reacted with the optically active tartaric acid. In the method, the content of a malic acid dialkyl ester is reduced to 0.1% or less and the content of a fumaric acid dialkyl ester is reduced to 0.1% or less.
