    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and efficiently perform the continuous adsorption and removal of mercury from a liq. hydrocarbon contg. mercury and asphaltene by bringing the hydrocarbon into contact with a porous inorg. adsorbent it to adsorption treatment and then bringing it into contact with a specific active carbon adsorbent. SOLUTION: The liq. hydrocarbon contains several tens ppm to several thousands ppm silver and 14-20ppm asphaltene. The porous inorg. adsorbent (e.g. acid clay) pref. has a specific surface area of 200-1,500m /g, an average micropore size of 50Å, and a particle size of 0.5-5mm. The conditions of absorption treatment can be selected optionally; the hydrocarbon may be supplied hot, though the adsorption can be performed satisfactorily at normal temp. When a fixed bed of the adsorbent is used, the LV value is set at 100cm/min or lower. The mercury content of the hydrocarbon can be reduced to 4-20ppb by the adsorption. The active carbon used has an average micropore size of 10-50Å, a specific surface area of 200-2,500m /g, and a micropore vol. of 0.4-1.5ml/g, and the micropore vol. of the carbon with a micropore size of 50Å or lower accounts for a least 50% of the micropore vol. with a micropore size of 200Å or lower.
