    • PURPOSE:To improve a ternary catalyst using palladium as a catalyst component and to further enhance NOx removing capacity in an atmosphere slightly lean as compared with a stoichiometric atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:The catalyst for purifying exhaust gas is constituted of a carrier base material, the catalyst supporting layer applied and formed to the surface of the carrier base material and the catalytically active component consisting of palladium, platinum and alkaline earth metal supported on the catalyst supporting layer and characterized by that platinum is supported on the upstream side with respect to an exhaust gas flowing direction. By supporting platinum having a characteristic excellent in purifying capacity under a condition large in the amplitude of fluctuation of an air/fuel ratio (A/F) on the upstream side, the balance between the characteristic of palladium excellent in ternary activity in the vicinity of stoichiometry and the characteristic of platinum excellent in NOx removing capacity on a lean atmosphere side becomes optimum and NOx removing capacity in an atmosphere slightly lean as compared with a stoichiometric atmosphere is enhanced.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the low temperature activity of a catalyst by providing the first process for the preparation of the first alcohol solution or ethylene glycol solution, the second process for the preparation of the second solution, the third process for the formation of a hydrolytic product, the fourth process for the processing of said product into carrier powder and the fifth process for the formation of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The first process adjusts the first alcohol solution or an ethylene glycol solution which contains carrier powder carrying a catalytic metal and 10 to 50wt.% of aluminum alkoxide for the former. The second process adds a catalytic metal salt dissolved in the ethylene glycol solution to the first alcohol solution or ethylene glycol solution and thereby prepares these materials as the second solution containing the carrier powder, aluminum alkoxide and catalytic metal salt. The third process forms a hydrolytic product on the surface of the carrier powder by adding water to the second solution and allowing the mixture to undergo a hydrolytic process. The fourth process separates and bakes the carrier powder from the second solution to obtain carrier powder to be carried 2A. Finally the fifth process forms a catalyst 1A.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the low temperature activity of a catalyst by manufacturing it through the first process where the first alcohol solution or ethylene glycol solution is prepared, the second process where the second solution is prepared, the third process where a carrier containing water is formed, the fourth process where a hydrolytic product is formed and the fifth process where a catalyst carrier is baked. CONSTITUTION:The first process is to prepare the first alcohol solution or ethylene glycol solution containing aluminum alkoxide, and the second process is to add catalytic metal salts dissolved in an ethylene glycol solution to the first alcohol or ethylene glycol solution to prepare the second solution containing aluminum alkoxide and catalytic carrier salts. The third process is to obtain a carrier containing water by allowing water to attach to the surface 12a of a catalyst carrying layer 12 and the surface of an active alumina particle 2, the fourth process is to form a hydrolytic product on the both surfaces of a carrier containing water by allowing the carrier to come in contact with the second solution, and the fifth process is to bake catalyst carriers 1A, 2 having the hydrolytic product.
