    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnesium type hydrogen storage material which has a large hydrogen storage amount and is capable of taking out stored hydrogen in a low temperature region, and to provide a method for conveniently producing the magnesium type hydrogen storage material with high purity. SOLUTION: The magnesium type hydrogen storage material is represented by the formula: (Mg 1-x M x )(NH 2 ) 2±y , wherein M is one or more kinds selected from alkali elements and alkali earth elements, 0≤x≤0.75 and 0≤y≤0.75. Or, it is represented by the formula: (Mg 1-x M x )(NH) 1±y , wherein M is one or more kinds selected from alkali elements and alkali earth elements, 0≤x≤0.75 and 0≤y≤0.75. The magnesium type hydrogen storage materials are produced, for example, by allowing reaction gas to react with a magnesium type hydride raw material as a nitrogen source to prepare NH bonds while adding at least one of heat and mechanical energy.
