    • PURPOSE:To increase a subcriticality of a nuclear reactor during a reactor shut down, by inserting inclusions of a certain constant length having a significantly degraded concentration of fissile nuclides into a part of fuel rods and by arranging the fuel rods having the inclusions in an outside region of a fuel assembly. CONSTITUTION:A fuel rod having an inclusion 31 is formed so as to an appropriate length of the inclusion to be less than 1/3H and a height of the inclusion at its center to be around 3/4H from the lowest end of an effective length of the fuel. The reason is that a subcriticality is especially shallow in a range of around 1/4H at a height of around 3/4H. Moreover, for prevention of an output spike, an output spike suppressor 36a is inserted next to the inclusion 36, and in case of a boiling water nuclear reactor, the fuel rods 31 are arranged in this surface for the purpose of utilization of an subcriticality increasing phenomenon which the fuel rods 31 have, mainly for the side where control rods are not inserted, and water gaps between adjacent fuel assemblies are expanded, and consequently, a subcriticality of a reactor during its shut down can be increased.

    • PURPOSE:To heighten the reactivity value of a control rod and enlarge a reactor stop margin while planning a long term of nuclear life by applying a long life type neutron absorber to a U-shaped sheath and arranging many neutron absorbers at the part of high reactivity effect. CONSTITUTION:An edge structure material 11 and an end structure material 12 are joined by the use of a tie rod 13 and a U-shaped sheath 15 is anchor on the tie rod 13, the edge structure material 11 and the end structure material 12 to form a plurality of wings 16. The sheath 15 of the wings 16 is formed of a long life type neutron absorber composed of hafnium metal or alloy whose main constituent is hafnium. Further, the area of the inserting end side neighboring to the inserting edge area of the wing 4 is formed so that the total quantity of the neutron absorber is gradually reduced toward the inserting end side in the longitudinal direction. Water which is moderator is introduced in the inner part of the sheath 15, neutrons are moderated by the water, neutron absorbing effect, namely, the reactivity effect of a control rod is enlarged because of the neutrons of absorbable energy.
