    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce thickness dimensions of a balance weight to install a drive device and to reduce a clearance between a side surface of a passenger car and an inwall surface of an elevator shaft required to arrange the balance weight. SOLUTION: It is possible to extensively reduce outside diametrical dimensions of a driving sheave 52 as a thin and flat rope 55 is used as a rope for elevating drive to be used to elevate the balance weight 20. Consequently, it is possible to arrange the driving sheave 52 on the balance weight 20 so that an axis of rotation of the driving sheave 52 extends along the cross direction of the balance weight 20. The dimensions of a driving motor 51 and the driving sheave 52 are never accumulated and the thickness dimensions of the balance weight 20 never becomes large as the driving motor 51 of the drive device 50 is coaxially arranged with the driving sheave 52. Consequently, it is possible to reduce the clearance between the rear side surface 10B of the passenger car 10 and the rear inwall surface 9B of the elevator shaft 9 required to arrange the balance weight 20.
