    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a martensitic stainless steel suitable for a very deep oil well, having high strength and having excellent toughness.
      SOLUTION: The martensitic stainless steel has a composition comprising 0.01 to 0.1% C, 0.05 to 1% Si, 0.05 to 1.5% Mn, ≤0.03% P, ≤0.01% S, 9 to 15% Cr, 0.1 to 2.0% Ni, ≤0.05% Al and ≤0.1% N, and further comprising one or more kinds selected from 0.05 to 4% Cu, 0.05 to 3% Mo, 0.005 to 0.5% V, 0.005 to 0.5% Nb, 0.0002 to 0.005% B, 0.0003 to 0.005% Ca, 0.0003 to 0.005% Mg and 0.0003 to 0.005% rare earth metals, and the balance Fe with impurities, and in which the thickness of a retained austenite phase in the steel measured by the following method (not shown) is ≤100 nm, and X-ray integrated intensities 111γ and 110α satisfy inequality (a): 0.005≤111γ/(111γ+110α)≤0.05.
