By conducting reading of such three kinds of recording values +1, 0, -1 by the phase mask linearly by performing such a read-out operation, an equalizing filter for preventing interference between the codes can be operated effectively, and both increase in high density recording can be achieved.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recording and reproducing apparatus capable of relaxing requirement on accuracy of alignment of a one-dimensional light receiving element and a one-dimensional optical modulation element, and also can reproduce a clock satisfactorily without using a preamble.
      SOLUTION: The number of light receiving elements is made larger than the number of optical modulation elements and data are over-sampled. Zero cross timing of a read signal is extracted, a clock signal matching with the timing is obtained by frequency analysis. The read signal is sampled at the timing. Preamble and pixel matching becomes unnecessary. The requirement on accuracy of alignment of the one-dimensional light receiving element and the one-dimensional optical modulation element therefore can be relaxed, while the clock can be reproduced satisfactorily without using a preamble.
