    • PURPOSE:To vapor deposit and penetrate a penetrant matal and to form easily and uniformly a smooth layer having permeated metal by embedding a metallic material to be coated, which is coated with vegetable fibers on the surface, into a penetrant of metallic powder contg. an accelerator and heating the same to the diffusion temp. for causing permeation of the penetrant. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a metallic material to be treated is coated with vegetable fibers, whereafter said material is embedded in a semihermetic vessel packed therein with a powdery penetrant of a desired metal contg. an accelerator and is heated at a temp. and for a time for causing the desired diffusion and penetration of the metal to the internal part of said material. Thus, the metal is vapor-deposited and penetrated. Suitable powder of metals such as chromium, alloys such as iron-aluminum, or the like is properly used according to applications for the penetrant, and a small amt. of a halide such as NH4Cl or the like which accelerates penetration and diffusion is added thereto. A cotton fabric or the like is suitable as the vegetable fibers, and is carbonized at about 300 deg.C to be used as a filter to prevent the sticking of the penetrant powder on the surface of the material to be treated. The vapor of the metallic halide generated at about 800-1,100 deg.C passes through said filter to deposit and fix the penetrant metal on the surface of the material to be treated.
