      SOLUTION: The light from a manuscript is condensed by the condensing lens of the first optical system or the condensing lens of the second optical system. The condensing lens of the second optical system condenses light from the half region of a region in the direction of main scanning where the condensing lens of the first optical system condenses light, and lets a line sensor form an image. Therefore, the read region SB at the center in the direction of main scanning is read, and the resolution becomes twice that at reading all of the region in the direction of main scanning. The manuscript placed on a manuscript stage 20 is read half at a time, being divided in two times, by shifting the manuscript stage 20 in the direction of main scanning, and the full page of the manuscript is read with one time of manuscript setting. This image reader is simpler in structure than the case of shifting a carriage in two-axis direction. The aberration by lens is reduced and the image quality of the read image rises, by reading the center side in the direction of main scanning.
