    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic charging device in which a discharging gap formed in the neighborhood of a contacting place of an electrostatic charging member and a photoreceptor can surely and equally maintained.
      SOLUTION: Both of the ends of a flexible film 102 are supported and fixed by supporting members 103 to 105 to constitute an electrostatic charging member 101. This film 102 is in contact with a charged body with comparatively small mechanical abutting force to form an area N. Then, when voltage is supplied from a power source 106, electrostatic attractive force is exerted more than the mechanical abutting force on between a film 102 in the area N and the conductive base body 11 of the charged body 110. With this electrostatic attractive force, the film 102 in the area N is abutted so as to follow the charged body 110. When the height of an unexpected protrusion existing in the neighborhood of the area N of the electrostatic charging member is made to be smaller than (Rz/2+4.4) (μm) where Rz represents the ten-point average roughness of the electrostatic charging member 101, abnormal electrostatic charging is prevented and uniform electrostatic charging is realized.
