    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making an electrochromic device incorporating an improved ion conductor layer and a method of making an ion conductor for use in other applications. SOLUTION: The improved ionic conductor layer 23 comprises at least two ion transport layers 31, 33 and a buffer layer 32, wherein the at least two ion transport layers 31, 33 and the buffer layer 32 alternate within the ion conductor layer 23 such that the ion transport layers 31, 33 are in communication with a first and a second electrodes. The improved ion conductor layer 23 colors more deeply by virtue of an increased voltage developed across the ion conductor layer 23 prior to electric breakdown while reducing the amount of electronic leakage and showing high thermal stability.
