    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which has a large discharge capacity and excellent cycle characteristics.
      SOLUTION: The anode material is made of only two kinds or more of an active phase consisting of an intermetallic compound which can store and release Li reversibly, or further includes an inactive phase which does not store Li. A difference of discharge capacity per volume of larger two kinds of active phases is within a range of two times or more or 18.8 times or less, and then, the active phase which has a larger discharge capacity occupies 80 vol.% or less in volume of the anode material. The larger two kinds of active phases are preferably to be an intermetallic compound belonging to the same crystal system and more preferably to occupy 50 vol.% or more of the anode material.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery having a high discharge capacity and excellent cycle characteristics.
      SOLUTION: The negative electrode material for the nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is formed of only active phases not less than two kinds containing an intermetallic compound which can reciprocally store or release Li, or further includes an inactive phase which does not store Li. The ratio of the discharge capacity per unit volume, of the top two kinds in volume of active phases, is in the range of 2-20, and the active phase with the larger discharge capacity accounts for not more than 80 vol.% of the negative electrode material. The top two active phases in terms of volume are preferably the intermetallic compounds belonging to the same crystal system, and preferably account for not less than 50 vol.% of the negative electrode material. The average crystal grain diameter of the active phase is preferably not more than 10μm.
