SOLUTION: Data is exchanged between an interface controller 10 and a host computer 1. The inputted data is signal-processed and converted into a prescribed format by a recording data processing system 20. A signal supplied from the recording data processing system 20 is recorded on a magnetic tape, and also the magnetic tape is reproduced by a recording and reproducing part 30. A reproducing output from the recording and reproducing part 30 is signal- processed by a reproducing data processing system 40 so as to reproduce the data recorded on the magnetic tape. A tape traveling system of the recording and reproducing part 30 is controlled by a tracking control system 50. Each system is controlled by a system controller 60 so that the indentification information of the final group is recorded in the end-of-data area, and also the identification information of the final group is read out accordingly.
