    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a high rate discharge characteristic by incorporating an oxide of tungsten and/or molybdenum, isopolyacid and/or heteropolyacid of tungsten and molybdenum, or their salts into a positive electrode plate or a negative electrode plate. SOLUTION: A paste-like active material for a positive electrode is made by kneading 100 parts by weight of lead powder containing 70-80 wt.% of lead monoxide and 20 parts by weight of sulfuric acid having a concentration of 35 wt.% and a paste active material for the positive electrode is made by adding tungsten oxide to it, and kneading them together. When the quantity of tungsten oxide added to the positive electrode of a lead-acid battery which has been made and to a negative electrode does not exceed, for instance, 2.1 parts by weight, its high rate discharge characteristic can be improved. This is also similar for the case that molybdenum is added. Next, the high rate discharge characteristic is significantly improved by incorporating isopolyacid and/or heteropolyacid of tungsten and/or molybdenum, or their salts into the positive electrode plate or the negative electrode plate.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the dependence on the fiber, which forms a retainer, and to improve the efficient discharging characteristic by providing acid resistant sulfate in a retainer, which abuts on a plate surface. SOLUTION: At the time of manufacturing a retainer, powder of acid resistant sulfate is added so as to manufacture a retainer having a different content of the acid resistant sulfate, and these retainers are laminated. As an acid resistant sulfate, calcium sulfate is desirable, and it is included at about 5 wt.% in the glass fiber for use. At the time of manufacturing a battery, a retainer having a predetermined thickness, which is formed by adding the acid resistant sulfate to a glass fiber having a predetermined fiber diameter, is used so as to manufacture a required sealed battery. This sealed lead-acid battery has excellent efficient discharging characteristic, and holds a larger quantity of the sulfate solution in comparison with a conventional one. Work of the acid resistant sulfate can be more efficiently showed by forming the content of the sulfate calcium so as to be increased, as it comes close to a surface of the plate.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lead-acid battery with highly rated discharge characteristics enhanced by a method wherein a specific amount of expanded graphite to a weight of active material is contained in positive electrode plate material and/or negative electrode plate material, and in the expanded graphite a sulfone group is coupled to its carbon end. SOLUTION: In a lead-acid battery, expanded graphite in the amount of not more than 5% of a weight of active material is contained in positive electrode material and/or negative electrode material, and in the expanded graphite, a sulfone group is coupled to its carbon end. By treating graphite thermally and by boiling, powder dispersed in sulfuric acid solution, a layer structure of the graphite grows (expands), and a specific surface area becomes large. In addition, the sulfone group is attached to the carbon end in the graphite thus treated, and wettability for the sulfuric acid solution (electrolyte) containing sulfuric acid ion which participates in charging and discharging reaction of the lead-acid battery is enhanced. Furthermore, there is a possibility that the sulfone group attached to the graphite acts as a supply source of the sulfuric acid ion which participates in charging and discharging reaction of the lead-acid battery.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce current in trickle charging at a high temperature by adding a reactive surface active agent having a double bond capable of radical polymerization in a molecule to an active material of a negative electrode plate and electrolyte of a lead-acid battery. SOLUTION: In a lead-acid battery where a positive electrode plate and a negative electrode plate are layered through an electrolyte layer containing electrolyte, a reactive surface active agent having a double bond capable of radical polymerization in a molecule is added to an active material of the negative electrode plate or to both the active material of the negative electrode plate and the electrolyte. For example, sulfuric ester sodium salt of polyoxyethylene allyl glycygyl-nonylphenyl ether is used as the reactive surface active agent, and is added by about 0.1 to 0.5wt.% to lead powder of a negative electrode in the negative electrode plate. About 0.05 to 0.2% is added to lead powder of the negative electrode plate in the electrolyte. Therefore, the negative electrode plate can be easily manufactured without reducing viscosity of active material paste.
