    • PURPOSE:To obtain a nonlinear element showing rectifying characteristics in I-V characteristics and to enable high quality display with high contrast and small cross talk of a display device using this nonlinear element by forming the active layer of an element in each pixel in such a manner that the layer consists of a ZnS film and a semiconductor film having p-type electric conductivity. CONSTITUTION:The nonlinear element consists of a first electrode 2 electrically connected to scanning wiring, second electrode 5 electrically connected to a pixel electrode, and active layer 9 between the first electrode 2 and the second electrode 5. This active layer consists of a ZnS film 3 and a semiconductor film 4 comprising a material except for ZnS formed in such a manner that at least a part of the film 4 is in contact with the ZnS film 3. The semiconductor film 4 is formed by using one or more kinds of material selected from CdS, ZnSe, GaSe, ZnO, TaON, and CdO. Further, the active layer 9 may have a semiconductor film 4 comprising a semiconductor material having p-type electric conductivity.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a display device provided with a two-terminal element superior I-V characteristic and easy to manufacture. CONSTITUTION:The two-terminal element is formed by holding a semiconductor layer 4 and insulating film 3 between a first electrode 2b and a second electrode 6 in a direction perpendicular to a substrate 1. Since the semiconductor layer 4 is provided. superior symmetric property with steep I-V characteristic can be obtained. In addition to that, the plane area of the semiconductor layer 4 is formed in an area smaller than that of the first electrode 2b and that of the second electrode 6, and both electrodes 2b, 6 function as a light shielding layer for the semiconductor layer 4. Therefore, the I-V characteristic can be improved more than the case when light irradiates, and also, since it is not required to form the electrode and the light shielding layer separately. which makes the element easy to be manufactured.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the reflection type color liquid crystal display device which provides a bright display without using any back light by forming a transparent fluorescent layer on a reflection electrode and converting ultraviolet light into visible light. CONSTITUTION:The reflection electrode 43 made of aluminum, silver, etc., is formed in an area corresponding to each picture element and serves as a picture element electrode, and its surface is covered with the fluorescent layer 44, made of transparent resin to which fluorescent pigment is added, including a gate bus electric conductor 32, a source bus electric conductor 39, and an ES layer 42. Incident light 20 is made incident from an opposite-side substrate 27 and reaches a TFT-side substrate 26. In this case, some of ultraviolet rays are absorbed by the fluorescent layer 44, the light which is not absorbed by the layer 44 is reflected by the electrode 43, and part of the ultraviolet light is absorbed by the layer 44. The ultraviolet light absorbed by the layer 33 at the time of the incidence and reflection is converted into the visible light, which is projected on a display surface together with reflected light 21 through liquid crystal 49, a color filter 46, a counter electrode 47, and a glass substrate 45. Consequently, the display is bright and the display contrast becomes excellent.
