The discharge capacity per unit area of the positive electrode 1 is smaller at the peripheral portion than at the center portion and so the utilization factor of active material in the negative electrode 2 is smaller at the peripheral portion than at the center portion of the electrode 2. the utilization factor of the active material is thus reduced at the peripheral portion of the negative electrode where current tends to be concentrated by edge effect and so the growth of dendritic crystals of lithium or conversion of the lithium alloy into powder at the peripheral portion of the negative electrode is restrained. The cycle characteristic of the battery is thereby enhanced.
