    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic device which can be easily manufactured, is resistant to undesirable cracking and failure and comprises a plastic material. SOLUTION: The electrochromic device comprises: a first substrate 12 having at least one polymeric surface; a primer layer 32 along the polymeric surface; a first conductive transparent coating 18 along the primer of the first substrate; a second substrate 14 spaced apart from the first substrate to define a chamber therebetween; a second conductive transparent coating 20 on the surface of the second substrate 14; and an electrochromic medium which is contained in the chamber, has reduced luminous transmittance when an electric power is applied to the first and second conductive coatings, and establishes a potential via the electrochromic medium, wherein the electrochromic medium and the primer layer are compatible.
