    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of reducing initial investment and maintenance cost of processing line through realization of solid solution treatment of only elemental nitrogen in continuous line processing, and also increasing hardness while keeping ductility through diffusion-solid solution treatment of elemental nitrogen without generating nitride under the atmospheric pressure.SOLUTION: The surface hardening method of material such as metal or resin by pulse-arc type plasma jet is characterized by irradiating pulse-arc type plasma jet on the surface of material to be processed, while adding nitrogen gas as the material gas together with hydrogen gas into a vessel and keeping inside of the vessel at the atmospheric pressure or in a positive pressure state near plus atmospheric pressure. The nitrogen gas flow rate is 1 to 100 L/min, hydrogen gas/nitrogen gas flow rate ratio is 0.1 to 200%, temperature of material processed is ambient temperature to 1,000°C, processing time is 0.01 to 24 hours. The material to be processed are either metals or insulation materials.
