    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device with improved light transmittance through light transmitting apertures while maintaining high reflectance of a reflective layer.SOLUTION: A reflective layer formed on an element substrate for making efficient use of light from a light source comprises a metallic film and a reflection enhancing film. In each aperture for passing the light from the light source, the metallic film is removed while a silicon nitride film, which is a part of the reflection enhancing film, remains. Thickness of the silicon nitride film shall be a quarter of an incident light wavelength in the reflection enhancing film, and shall be half an incident light wavelength in the apertures. In order to realize such configuration, the silicon nitride film, which is a part of the reflection enhancing film, and a passivation film provided above an interlayer insulating film are laminated together in the apertures.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device having a wide view angle which is uniform irrespective of the direction.SOLUTION: A display device includes a backlight which emits planar light and pixels, each having: a first aperture layer (225) having first apertures for passing the light from the backlight; a mechanical shutter (228) which is electrically driven by a thin film transistor to control transmission of light coming through the first apertures; a second aperture layer (212) having second apertures, corresponding to the first apertures of the first aperture layer, for passing the light coming through the mechanical shutter; and a high refractive index layer (214) which covers the second apertures of the second aperture layer and is a transparent layer having a refractive index higher than that of a transparent fluid (221) that fills a space between the first aperture layer and the second aperture layer. Thickness of the high refractive index layer is smaller in central sections of the second apertures than in end sections thereof.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device in which the electric power consumption of a backlight is suppressed, and a control method of the same.SOLUTION: A display device comprises: a backlight having light emission parts of a plurality kinds of colors; and a display panel for displaying an image by controlling the transmission quantity of light emitted by the backlight. The display device is of a color sequential drive type by which light emission parts of the plurality kinds of colors are sequentially emitted during one field period displaying images for one picture. Duty ratios of the light emission parts of the plurality kinds of colors are determined so that the sum of average electric power consumptions of the light emission parts of the plurality kinds of colors is reduced than when duty ratios of the light emission parts of the plurality kinds of colors are equal on the basis of duty ratio dependence of the average electric power consumptions in a condition that chromaticity of light emitted from the backlight during one field period and the amount of the light are made to be predetermined constant values.
