摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the emission characteristic when flaw or dust is present on an anode by forming an insulating film between the anode and organic EL layer of an organic EL display comprising the anode, the organic EL layer, and a cathode successively laminated on a substrate. SOLUTION: An anode 102 such as ITO is formed on a substrate 106, for example, by evaporation, patterned by photolithography, and then etched to form a stripe anode. To this substrate, a polyimide is applied as an insulating film to the whole surface of the anode 102 in a thickness of about 50 A. This laminated substrate is prebaked and cured in a clean oven. A positive hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, and a cathode 101 are laminated on the substrate by vacuum evaporation. When a flaw or dust is present on the anode, the surface to laminate an organic EL layer is flattened, the organic EL layer can be formed in a sufficient thickness even in the part where the flaw or dust is present to avoid the short-circuit between the cathode and the anode.

SOLUTION: A plurality of anode layers 2 consisting of ITO, a polymer layer 4, an organic EL layer 3 consisting of a positive hole transport layer for forming a light emitting layer and the light emitting layer, a plurality of cathode layers 1 consisting of metal electrodes crossing the anode layers 2 are successively laminated on a transparent substrate 6 consisting of glass. Each of the anode layers 2 and the cathode layers 1 has a substantially strip form, and they are arranged so as to be parallel to each other with a prescribed space. The extending directions of the cathode layer 1 and the anode layer 2 are substantially crossed at right angles, and the area where they are crossed, or the area where the organic EL layer 3 is nipped by the cathode layer 1 and the anode layer 2 forms a light emitting area, which corresponds to one picture element of a display.

SOLUTION: An insulation film 3 with an opening 3a is formed on the first display electrode. The four corners of the opening 3a are formed into round shape. An organic EL luminous film 4 is formed on the insulation film 3 and the opening 3a. The corners of the opening 3a of the insulation film 3 (a part of the first display electrode 2a) are made so as not to stick out from round shaped sides even if the relative location of the organic EL luminous film 4 and the insulation film 3 deviates from erch other. The corners of the opening may as well be shaped into polygonal shape instead of round shape.
