As the wear advances, optical fibers F1-Fn wear inward radially from outside together with the filler 7 and are broken. For the purpose, the state of the breaking of the optical fibers F1-Fn is checked to detect the wear quantity of the piston rider ring 8 fitted to the piston 5.

摘要： PURPOSE:To measure the quantity of abrasion of a seal material like a rider ring by providing a detecting element which outputs a detection signal corresponding to the deviation between a cylinder and a piston. CONSTITUTION:A thin discoid member 19 to be detected is fixed to the nut 13 of the piston. Then, concentric circular projections N1-N4 which project toward a cylinder head 20 in parallel to the axis of the member to be detected and annular grooves M1-M4 at their outer peripheries are formed on the front surface. An end part 23 of an optical fiber 22 which is aligned is fixed to the head 20. The lower parts of rider rings 16 and 17 increase in the quantity of abrasion with time. Consequently, light passed through an optical fiber element wire 22a from the end part 23 is shifted to illuminate the bottom of the groove M1 from the end surface of the projection N1 and the light is supplied to a photodetecting element 25 through an element wire 22b. At this time, the quantity of light of the element 25 decreases below that when none of the rider rings wears and the element wire 22b faces the projection N1. The quantity of abrasion of the seal material is measured from this decrease in the quantity.

摘要： PURPOSE:To prevent the breakdown due to the contact of a piston with a cylinder, by providing a member to be detected on an end face of the piston and also by providing a cylinder head with a means to apply a light to a reflecting region and to detect the quantity of a reflected light from the reflecting region. CONSTITUTION:A member 19 to be detected is fixed to a nut 13 of a piston 2. When the lower pars of rider rings 16 and 17 contact slidably with the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder 1 and the amount of abrasion thereof increases with time, a light emitted from an optical fiber 22a and passing through an end part 23 is applied to a reflecting region N2 of the member 19, and the light reflected therefrom passes through an optical fiber strand 22b from the end part 23 and is given to a photodetecting element 25. Since a gap between the end part 23 and the region N2 is smaller than a gap between the end part 23 and a reflecting region N1, an output voltage of an element 25 for the quantity of a detected light increases. Moreover, due to the abrasion of the rings 16 and 17, the light from the end part 23 is reflected in the sequence of reflecting regions N3-N5. Thereby the output voltage in the element 25 corresponding to the quantity of the detected light changes to increase sequentially with time. Thus, the measurement of the amount of abrasion of the rings 16 and 17 is enabled.

摘要： PURPOSE:To permit the air-tight connection and fixing of both of a heat transfer tube and a tube plate with a small expanding rate of the tube, by a method wherein a seal material, having lower hardness than the heat transfer tube and the tube plate, is interposed between the outer peripheral surface of the end of the heat transfer tube and the inner peripheral surface of the mounting hole of the tube plate while said end of the heat transfer tube is expanded from inside under this condition. CONSTITUTION:A seal material 19 is interposed between the outer peripheral surface of the end of a heat transfer tube 6 and the inner peripheral surface of the mounting hole 18 of a tube plate 7. The heat transfer tube 6 is made of copper or the like while the tube plate 7 is made of mild steel or the like. An elastic body, consisting of a high polimerized material such as urethane rubber, fluororubber, fluorine resin or the like, for example, and having a hardness lower than the hardnesses of respective materials such as the heat transfer tube 6 and the tube plate 7 or the like, is suitable for the seal material 19. The tube plate 7 is fixed air-tightly to the cylinder 11 by welding. The end of the heat transfer tube 6 is expanded under a condition that the end of the heat transfer tube 6 is fitted into the mounting hole 18 of the tube plate 7 while interposing a seal material 19 therebetween. According to this method, the end of the heat transfer tube 6 may be connected and fixed air-tightly to the tube plate 7 through the seal material 19.

Another elastomer sealing member 22 is constituted of a fixing part 22a, attached and fixed to the baffle plate 10, and the seal lip 22b while the fixing part 22a is provided with an engaging protuberance for fitting and fixing the fixing part 22a to dovetail groove on the whole circumferential surface of the arc of the baffle plate 10. the seal lip 22b is provided at the high-pressure side of cooling water and is contacted with the high-pressure side of the baffle plate 10 and the inner surface of the cylinder 1 of a shell to effect self sealing effect.
