    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge unit by forming a hinge freely openably/closably hinging an upper unit to a lower unit with a simple structure in an easily height position adjustable way without causing a change in a hinge mechanism such as a spring through the height position adjustment and in a way capable of attaining a stable and normal opening/closing operation at all times. SOLUTION: The hinge unit is provided with a first fitting member fixed to the lower unit such as an image reading apparatus and a second fitting member fixed to the upper unit such as an original feeder. The first and the second fitting members are hinged freely turnably to a turning shaft (hinge pin). Further, a compression spring is provided to one of the first and the second fitting members and a damping member with a damping face engaging with the spring is provided to the other. One of the first and the second fitting members supports an engagement position between a pressing engagement section provided to one end of the compression spring and the damping face and a turnably journaling position of the turning shaft in a way capable of freely adjusting the height position. One of the first and the second fitting members supports the turnably journaling position of the turning shaft and the point of action (engaged position) of the spring in a way capable of freely adjusting the height position in this way.
