    • PURPOSE:To improve the reception sensitivity of an optical communication system as well as to enlarge the allowable transmission loss of the optical communication system and to make it possible to extend the transmission distance of the system by a method wherein an avalanche photodiode which is arranged in an optical reception device has a mechanism for cooling a light- receiving module built in the optical reception device to control the temperature of the module. CONSTITUTION:An optical communication system is provided with an optical transmission device 1, an optical fiber cable 2 and a temperature control optical reception device 3 provided with a built-in Ge-APD module which is subjected to temperature control. The Ge-APD module 4 of the device 3 is fixed on a Peltier cooler 5 and the temperature of the cooler 5 is set an arbitrary temperature and is kept constant by a temperature control circuit 6. An electrical signal which is obtained from the module 4 is processed and decoded by a reception circuit 7. The module 4 is subjected to temperature control and is always kept at 25 deg.C. A dark current and a multiplication dark current, which are made to flow through the module 4 in this case, are reduced to about 1/10 compared to those in the case of 60 deg.C.

    • PURPOSE:To easily fix an optical fiber to a ferrule in a short time, by previously filling up the narrow hole of the ferrule, into which the optical fiber is inserted, with solder. CONSTITUTION:A ferrule 1 is constituted of a capillary tube 2, terminal fittings 3 housed in one side of a hollow section 3a, and solder 4. The capillary tube 2 is formed of a ceramic material and driven into the terminal fittings 3 and its narrow-diameter hole having a diameter D is filled up with solder 4. The diameter D is made a little larger than that of an optical fiber 7 and the eccentricity of the narrow-diameter hole against the outer diameter A of the fittings 3 is set at or smaller than 1mum. After the ferrule 1 is kept by a heater composed of a V-groove 5 and keeping jig 6 and the solder 4 having a melting point of about 180 deg.C is melted by raising the temperature of the heater housed in the V-groove 5 to about 200 deg.C, the optical fiber 7 is inserted into the narrow hole of the capillary tube 7. After inserting the optical fiber 7, the ferrule 1 is removed from the heater. Thus the optical fiber 7 is fixed to the ferrule 1.

    • PURPOSE:To decrease optical loss by constituting terminal parts of a material having the etching rate higher than the etching rate of an optical fiber, projecting the end faces of the optical fibers by an etching treatment slightly from the terminal parts and butting the end faces to each other. CONSTITUTION:The terminal part 2 is constituted of the material which is more easily etched than the optical fiber 1. The end face of the optical fiber 1 and the terminal part 2 are polished to a specular surface state and are formed flush with each other. The end part is dipped for specified time in an etching liquid 3, then the end of the terminal part 2 projects slightly from the end of the terminal part 2 and a projecting part 5 is formed. The length of the projection is adjusted by the dipping time in the etching liquid. A pair of the optical fibers 1 and the terminal parts 2 having such end shapes are butted to each other and a precision sleeve 4 is packaged thereto, by which an optical connector is constituted. The space between the fibers 1 is therefore eliminated, by which the optical loss by the Fresnel reflection is decreased and operability is improved. The long-term stability is thus assured.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain an inexpensive non-reflection connector which permits the use of a general adapter by inserting and fixing a capillary having an optical fiber at the center into a tapered cylindrical member and projecting slightly the front end of the fiber.
CONSTITUTION: The front end of the cylindrical member 7 of an optical connector plug is tapered. The capillary 6 inserted and fixed with the optical fiber 5 in a tube is inserted and fixed to the center of the member 7. The front end of the capillary 6 is projected from the member 7. Since the front end of the member 7 is tapered, the front end of the fiber 5 is in the same position as the capillary 6 or is slightly projected therefrom. The connection of the fibers 5 to each other is thereby made possible and therefore there is no spacing at the fiber ends and the non-reflection connection is attained. The inexpensive connector is obtd. as the general adapter is usable.

    • PURPOSE: To array optical fibers with high working property by inserting the optical fibers into a ferrule having a taper-like guide hole and grinding the ferrule until the whole leading end of the optical fibers appears on the surface.
CONSTITUTION: Optical fibers 1 are inserted into holes of a plane plate 2 into which a string of holes having the diameter larger than the outer diameter D of each optical fiber 1 are formed. Then, the optical fibers 1 are inserted into the ferrule 3. The shape of the hole of the ferrule 3 on the section vertical to the optical axis direction is a rectangle and its inwall is formed like a taper. The rectangle of the leading hole of the ferrule 3 is formed by the side slightly shorter than the outer diameter D of the optical fiber 1 and the side slightly shorter than N×D (N is the number of optical fibers). The optical fibers 1 are arrayed as a string inside the ferrule 3 without any gap. Then, the leading end of the ferrule 3 is ground until the section of the optical fibers 1 appear.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain stable light receiving sensitivity and multiplication factor even when an incident light position to an APD is deviated by specifying a relation of a distance between an avalanche photodiode and a lens principal plane, and a distance between an optical fiber and the lens principal plane. CONSTITUTION:A lens 12 is arranged on an optical axis between an avalanche photodiode (APD) 13 and an optical fiber 11, and couples them optically. In this state, at the time of light-reception, a light beam emitted from the optical fiber 11 is condensed through the lens 12, and made incident on the light receiv ing surface of the APD 13. In this case, the relation of the light receiving diame ter D of the APD 13 and the diameter (a) of the core diameter 14 of the optical fiber 11 is set to D >= (a), and also, the relation of a distance L1 between the APD 13 and the lens 12 principal plane, and a distance L2 between the optical fiber 11 and the lens 12 principal plane is set as D/a>=¦L1/L2¦=m>=1 (m : multipli cation factor). In such a manner, even in the case an incident light position is deviated by setting the light receiving surface of the APD 13, stable light receiving sensitivity and multiplication factor are obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the stiffening of an optical fiber by the penetration of an adhesive agent and the breakage arising therefrom by press-fitting a press- fitting sleeve onto a slit sleeve by which a tensile fiber can be mechanically fixed. CONSTITUTION:The slit sleeve 12 provided with slitting parts 12a in the axial direction is put on the tensile fiber 13 and optical fiber jacket 14 of the optical fiber covering the rear end of a ferrule 10 and the press-fitting sleeve 16 having the inside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the part pro vided with the slitting parts 12a of the slit sleeve 12 is press-fitted onto the outer periphery of slit sleeve 12 from the rear. The slit sleeve 12 is surely brought into contact with the optical fiber jacket 14 by this press-fitting by which the jacket is mechanically fixed; in addition, the sure fixing by the adhe sive 15 is attained as well. The need for applying the adhesive directly on the tensile fiber is eliminated in this way and the stiffening of the optical fiber by the penetration of the adhesive and the breakage arising therefrom are prevented.
