    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely decrease total selenium to a prescribed regulated value or lower of sewage standards with treatment at ordinary temperature and enable existing general treatment equipment to be used by adding a titanium compound having an ion number of trivalent or less to waste water containing hexavalent and tetravalent selenium to reduce selenium. SOLUTION: A titanium compound having an ion number of trivalent or less is added to a waste water containing hexavalent and tetravalent selenium to reduce selenium. The reduction treatment by the addition of the titanium compound is carried out in an acidic region, pH of a liquid reduced by the addition of the titanium compound is set to 5 to 11, and air is blown into the liquid after the reduction, of which the pH has been set so 5 to 11, to aerate the liquid. After ferric hydroxide is added to the sewage containing hexavalent and tetravalent selenium to perform a first stage adsorption treatment, the titanium compound having an ion number of trivalent or less is added to the treated liquid to perform a second stage reduction treatment.

    • PURPOSE: To safely, efficiently and certainly remove a heavy metal up to low concn. by a small amt. of a treatment agent by adding alkali metal silicate to waste water containing a heavy metal to sediment the heavy metal and adding a flocculant thereto to separate and remove the floc of a flocculated sediment. CONSTITUTION: Alkali metal silicate is added to waste water containing a heavy metal to sediment the heavy metal and this sediment is flocculated by a flocculant to separate and remove floc. Even when waste water to be treated contains a calcium ion in high concn., the addition amt. of alkali metal silicate may be little by far as compared with the amt. of calcium and, even when alkaline waste water with pH 10 or more is treated, it is unnecessary to preliminarily adjust pH and, by merely adding alkali metal silicate, a heavy metal is reduced up to extremely low concn. sufficiently satisfying new waste water standards. Therefore, this method is extremely useful as a treatment method of heavy metal-containing water with high pH and high calcium concn.
