For example, a compound of formula (-)-I can be obtained through a new diastereomer salt by optically resolving a compound of formula (+ or -)-I using a carboxylic acid of formula (+)-III. As the compound of formula (+ or -)-I, trans-1- amino-2-indanol or cis-1-amino-2-indanol is especially preferably used. This optically active 1-amino-2-indanol is useful as an intermediate for synthesis of agricultural and medical drugs.
