    • PURPOSE:To obtain an electroviscous fluid, containing carbonaceous dispersed particles treated with an alcohol and an electrical insulating liquid in a nonaqueous system, having high electroviscous effects without deteriorating performances even in a high- temperature region and useful for an engine mount, etc. CONSTITUTION:This electroviscous fluid is obtained by carrying out the fluid catalytic cracking of a desulfurized oil prepared from a vacuum distillation gas oil of Arabian crude oil at 500 deg.C using a silica-alumina-based catalyst, heat-treating the resultant heavy oil having 320-550 deg.C boiling point at 430 deg.C temperature under 15kg/cm .G pressure for 3hr, then removing a light fraction under reduced pressure, heat-treating the prepared pitch at 400 deg.C temperature for 12hr in nitrogen, finely pulverizing the heat-treated pitch, mixing and stirring the resultant pitch particles in ethanol at ambient temperature for 20min, then filtering the pitch particles, drying the carbonaceous dispersed particles treated with the ethanol, subsequently adding the resultant particles to an electrical insulating liquid such as a silicone oil and dispersing the particles therein in a ball mill for 2hr. The obtained electroviscous fluid has high electroviscous effects in spite of a nonaqueous system without deteriorating performances even in a high-temperature region.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electroviscous fluid which is a homogeneous system not suffering from the settlement of particles, through which an electric current can hardly pass, has low viscosity before an electric field is applied thereto and undergoes a large change in torque when an electric field is applied thereto by using a specified liquid crystal polymer. SOLUTION: This fluid is obtained by uniformly dissolving 0.5-60wt.% at least one lyotropic liquid crystal polymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 500-1,500,000 and selected from among poly (γ-glutamate), represented by formulas I and II (R1 is a 1-7C alkyl, a 7C aralkyl, a 6 or 7C aryl, a 3-7C cycloalkyl and a mixture containing at least two of these groups; R2 is an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, a cycloalkyl or a mixture containing at least two of these groups, provided that each group has 8-30 carbon atoms; (m) is 1-6,500; (n) is 1-5,000; and n/m is 95/5 to 5/95), polyamino acids and polyisocyanates in a cyclic ketone or a mixed solvent comprising a cyclic ketone and at least one electrical insulation solvent selected from among hydrocarbon oils, ester oils and ether oils.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fluid which is a homogeneous system capable of avoiding the sedimentation of particles and greatly changing a torque before and after the application of an electric field by dissolving a lyotropic liquid crystalline polymer such as cellulose at a low concentration without manifesting the liquid crystallinity. CONSTITUTION:This fluid is obtained by dissolving a lyotropic liquid crystalline polymer, having a unit expressed by the formula (R is a l-7C alkyl, an aryl, etc.) and selected from a poly(gamma-glutamate), a polyisocyanate, a polysiloxane ester, an aromatic polyester, poly(beta-aspartate), an aromatic polyamide, cellulose (derivative), a polyamidohydrazine, a polyhydrazine, a polyphosphazene, an amphiphatic block copolymer, ribonucleic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid and a poly(meth)acrylic acid ester at a low concentration without manifesting the liquid crystallinity, preferably 0.1-7wt.% based on a solvent (preferably THF, etc.) in the solvent. Besides, the poly(gamma-glutamate) and polyisocyanate are preferable as the liquid crystalline polymer.
