    • PURPOSE:To make the detection range constant from a vehicle which mounts a radar equipment to a target regardless of whether the target is large or small by reducing the vertical beam angle of a radar antenna and causing the beam of a transmit radio wave to produce an elevation on the whole. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle 4 approaches a vehicle 14 which runs as shown by an arrow A from behind and enters the range of detection range L, a transmit wave radiated from the radar antenna 16 strikes the vehicle 4 and its reflected wave is received by the radar antenna 16 to be displayed on a display means. Then, the driver on the vehicle 14 knows that the following vehicle approaches and monitors the rear of the vehicle 14. The beam center 17 of the transmit wave is at a constant elevation angle theta2, so the approach is detected within nearly the same range of the detection range L regardless of whether the vehicle is large of small. Therefore, it is possible to detect the target approaching the vehicle 14 from behind within the range of the constant range, and the rear monitoring function of the radar device is improved to evade danger such as a collision securely.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent watching apparatus for obstacles at the back and side areas of a car in order to avoid a car accident by installing, indicators which indicate the obstacle detecting output from car-mounted sensors, whose watching ranges cover the back and side areas of the car, on or in the vicinity of a room mirror and side mirrors. CONSTITUTION:Indicators 44, 46, and 48 are formed by a lamp which lights when it detects an obstacke, an emission element such as an emission Diode, or an element like a liquid crystal which is characterized by its reflecting/transmitting characteristics for variable light. A wider area is provided over a mirror frame 52 in order to install the indicators 44, 46, and 48. The indicator 44 installed in the middle of a room mirror 50 indicates the output from a sensor 30, which keeps a lookout for the back area of a car body. The indicators 46 and 48, which are installed on the left and right sides of the room mirror 50 respectively, indicate the output from sensors 32 and 34, which keep a lookout for the left and right side areas of the rear part of the car. With this contrivance, a car driver is able to observe the output from the sensors 30, 32, and 34 for the back, the right, and left areas of the car by only glancing at the room mirror 50, and the can be free of a car accident through good observation of obstacles.

    • PURPOSE:To enable highly accurate measurement of distance from long to short range, by arranging a laser distance measuring device, a proximity sensor, a running state detector and a control means for switching a selection means over to the laser distance measuring device. CONSTITUTION:A proximity sensor 11 is provided outside a laser distance measuring device 10. A running state detector 13 is provided to detect that an automobile stops or almost stops and the sending of a laser light from the distance measuring device 10 is controlled by a control means 14 into which the detection signal of the detector and an object detection signal of the sensor 11 are inputted. On the other hand, a switch 12 does a changeover between the output of the distance measuring device 10 and the detection distance output of the sensor 11. In other words, the control means 14 halts the sending of a laser light from the distance measuring device 10 only when the automobile stops or almost stops while an object is detected with the sensor 11 while changes the switch 12 over to the sensor 11 position to perform a measurement of the shortest range. To measure long range, the distance measuring device 10 is actuated and the switch 12 is changed over to the position of the measuring device 10. This enables highly accurate distance measuring from long to the shortest range.
