      SOLUTION: A range measurement area is set on an imaging device capable of reading out pixels arranged in two dimensions in an imaging area in pixel units, and an image for range measurement is read out of the range measurement area, while thinned out at a prescribed thinning-out reading rate to calculate an AF evaluation value. In the remaining time after a high-speed reading of a main image of a single frame, the image for range measurement is read out and a focusing lens is moved, on the basis of the AF evaluation value to perform AF control. The thinning-out read rate is varied according to stages (focusing level) of the AF control. The image for range measurement is thinned out uniformly in the horizontal direction and the vertical direction of the range measurement area.
