    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter material for an air filter which improves the oil retention performance and achieves an extension of the exchange period of the air filter.
      SOLUTION: A filter paper 5A for a wet layer, which is the filter material for the air filter, consists of a base material mainly composed of a natural fiber with the fiber diameter of 10-50 μm and a fibrillated fine natural fiber with an average fiber diameter of 1 μm or below. Then, the base material is blended with the fine natural fiber by the blending ratio of 4-6 wt.%. Therefore, the rebound to the aeration resistance is controlled, while the oil retention performance can be improved, and also the dust holding amount (DHC) can be greatly increased. Accordingly, the exchange period of the air filter can extended.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure which provides a longer life to a filter element obtained by carrying out folding processing by alternately repeating mountain fold and valley fold of a filter medium for a filter with a low density in the upstream side and a high density in the downstream side. SOLUTION: A filter medium 2 for a filter is provided with density gradient by sticking and bonding a chemically bonded nonwoven fabric layer 5 with a low density in the upstream side and filter paper 6 with a high density in the downstream side. The value calculated by dividing the tensile strength in the vertical direction based on the fiber orientation of the chemically bonded nonwoven fabric layer 5 by the tensile strength in the transverse direction is defined as a vertical/transverse ratio and the vertical/transverse ratio is set to be 8 or higher. Further, the fiber orientation 5a of the chemically bonded nonwoven fabric layer 5 in the vertical direction is conformed to the height direction of the pleats 3a formed by mountain folding and valley folding.
