    • PURPOSE: To obtain alcohols at a high efficiency in liquid phase by catalytically hydrating an olefin using a heteropoly-acid as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: An olefin which is an aliphatic hydrocarbon compound having at least one or more carbon-carbon double bonds (e.g. ethylene or propylene) is catalytically hydrated by using a heteropoly-acid dispersed in an organic polymeric siloxane having a hydrocarbon group as a catalyst under conditions of water present in a liquid state at 0-500 deg.C under 0.5-500atm to afford alcohols. The stable catalyst having high activities without elimination and decomposition of acidic substances by the thermal decomposition of the catalyst which are disadvantages of a conventional solid heterogenous catalyst is obtained by using the heteropoly-acid as the catalyst and the deterioration in the activities of the catalyst due to the presence of water in the reactional system is further suppressed. The alcohols can be produced by directly hydrating the olefin even under low-temperature and low-pressure conditions according to this method. In addition, there is no fear of corroding reactional apparatuses, etc.
