    • PURPOSE:To prevent the formation of a carburied layer on the surface of a steel ingot by changing molten slag which is preliminarily prepd. into a continuous casting mold and forming and maintaining the molten slag layer of an adequate thickness in the initial stage of casting and during the casting operation. CONSTITUTION:The molten slag prepd. by heating and melting preliminarily molding powder by a burner, etc. enriched with oxygen is charged into a casting mold 1 to form the molten slag layer 3 having 4-15mm thickness on the molten metal surface in the mold 1 between the molten metal and the half-molten layer 4 of the molding powder in the initial stage of casting prior to charging of the molding powder in the stage of continuous casting in a continuous casting method consisting in pouring a molten steel 2 from an immersion nozzle 5 into the mold 1, casting said steel, charging the molding powder into the mold 1, forming the molten slag layer 3 and half-molten layer 4 on the molten metal surface and drawing the ingot. The thickness of the layer 3 is maintained within a 4-15mm range by charging of the molten slag, etc. even during the casting operation.
