    • PURPOSE:To provide a discharge lamp which can make dimming through changing of the number of electrode couples on which the voltage is to be impressed, by installing a plurality of electrode couples in the circumferential arrangement on the outside surface of an electric discharge vessel. CONSTITUTION:In a glass bulb 2 a medium for electric discharging is encapsulated, and a plurality of electrode couples 5a-5f are installed in the circumferential arrangement on the outside surface of this glass bulb 2. To dim the light output to one third, switches 6c, 6d are closed, and a voltage is impressed over the outside electrodes 5c, 5d. This causes voltage supply via the glass as a dielectric substance to xenon in the part confronting these outside electrodes 5c, 5d, and discharge occurs concentrated only on the part as approx. one third of the glass bulb 2 in its lower part. The generated ultraviolet rays excite a phosphor layer 3 and are converted into visible rays determined by the phosphor. The visible rays generated by the phosphor are emitted from the light output part 4 upon being dimmed down to one third.

    • PURPOSE:To properly maintain the air-conditioning ability of an air conditioner by a method wherein the rate of change of the indoor temperature with time after the stop of running of the compressor is computed to measure the size of the air- conditioning load amount, and the number of poles of the stator winding of the compressor motor is changed according to said result. CONSTITUTION:In the cooler, the value preset by an indoor temperature setting unit 10 and the value detected by an indoor temperature detector 8 are compared in a comparator 11, and according to said comparison result, a switch 12 is turned ON/ OFF to start/stop a compressor motor 2. In this case, when the switch 12 is turned off, the reference signal to be inputted to the comparator 11 is changed over to an ON reference signal 10a as well as a timer unit 14 is actuated. Then, after a given period of time has passed, an output is generated to turn on a switch 16, and the output of the temperature detector 8 at that time and an OFF reference signal 10b are inputted to an arithmetic device 15. The output thereof and a preset value 17a are compared 17, and according to said comparison result, a switch 13 is changed over to a two-pole terminal 13a or four-pole terminal 13b to control the number of revolutions of the motor 2.

    • PURPOSE:To provide a multicolor mood lighting system which is excellent in luminous efficiency and whose service life is long and in which the replacement of a lamp is easy by arranging plural paired electrodes in an electric discharge container holding body, sealing up an electric discharge medium in an electric discharge container, and applying a phosphor to the inner peripheral wall. CONSTITUTION:When high frequency voltage is impressed between respective plane-like electrodes 11a, 11b-13a, 13b, voltage is supplied to an electric discharge medium in an electric discharge container 5 through glass of a dielectric in contact with them or adjacent to them, so that electric discharge is caused. UV radiation generated by this discharge excites phosphor 6a-6c formed on the inner wall of the container 5, and emits red color, blue color, and green color visible beams each having a wave length characteristic of the phosphor from an upper part, an intermediate part and a lower part, and those are outputted from a light output part 7. A light flux is changed according to a voltage value of the impressed high frequency voltage. In this constitution, structure can be simplified and the replacement of a lamp only requires to insert o fit the lamp into a discharge container holding body 8, so that a multicolor mood lighting system, which is excellent in luminous efficiency and whose service life is long and in which the replacement of the lamp is easy, can be provided.

    • PURPOSE:To improve a freedom degree of a shape and enhance visibility of an indicating direction by providing a picture symbol in such a position as to be identified in the order of direction indication, and controlling to apply or stop a predetermined voltage to a plurality of planar electrodes according to the disposing order. CONSTITUTION:An emergency DC power source 13 is supplied with electric power via a charger 12 under a normal condition, namely, it is always charged. All of switches 15a-15c are closed by a control circuit 18, and a DC of the emergency DC power source 13 is converted into a high frequency AC of, e.g. 20kHz by an inverter 14 so as to be applied to electrodes 9a-9c. A voltage is supplied to xenon gas staying inside a vacuum glass container 6 via a glass as a dielectric which is brought into contact with the electrodes 9a-9c, thus generating electric discharge. Since an ultraviolet ray generated by the electric discharge excites a phosphor 7 formed on the inner wall of the vacuum glass container 6, emits visible light having a wave length peculiar to the phosphor 7, and outputs a visible beam from the front surface of an output unit 9, a display unit 6 is lit as a whole, i.e., the entire arrow mark is lit.
