    • PURPOSE:To obtain the title electrode of enhanced flexural strength, by kneading granular coke, binder pitch, and a specific carbon fiber-carbon composite, forming and calcination followed by graphitization. CONSTITUTION:First, 20-75vol.% of carbon fiber bundles each composed of 100-10,000 filaments are formed into rods using a carbonaceous binder (e.g. coal-based pitch). These rods are treated at low temperatures in an oxidative atmosphere followed by calcination at 600-1,000 deg.C in a non-oxidative atmosphere to produce a calcined product. Secondly, this product is put to oxidation treatment at 500-600 deg.C for 1-10min, in an inert gas atmosphere containing 5-50vol.% of an oxidative gas followed by cutting into a rodlike carbon fiber- carbon composite of 10-60mm length. Thence, (A) 100wt.% of size-regulated granular coke, (B) 25-50wt.% of softening point-regulated binder pitch, and (C) 1-10wt.% of said composite are blended and kneaded followed by forming, and calcination at 800-1,200 deg.C, then graphitization at 2,300-3,000 deg.C.
