    • PURPOSE:To high selectively produce a 1,4-dicyanobutene with industrial advantage by conducting dimerization of acrylonitrile in the presence of a phosphinite or phosphonite catalyst and in the coexistence a carbamic acid derivative. CONSTITUTION:This production of a 1,4-dicyanobutene is carried out by dimerizing acrylonitrile in the presense of a phosphinite catalyst or a phosphonite catalyst and in the coexistence of a carbamic acid derivative of the formula I (R is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aryl; R' is H, an alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aryl; a ring may be formed from R and R'). As the catalyst, a compound of the formula II or the formula III (R to R , R to R ), e.g. methyldiphenyl phosphinite or diethylphenyl phosphonite is preferably used. In addition, a phosphinite catalyst is preferably used in view of stability of the catalyst. Since the dimerization is inhibited by water, the content of water is reduced recommendably to about 100ppm by a satisfactory drying treatment. This method is free from clogging and advantageous in view of operations.

    • PURPOSE:To highly selectively produce a 1,4-dicyanobutene while inhibiting formation of a polymer by-product by conducting dimerization of acrylonitrile in the presence of a specified phosphinite or phosphinite catalyst in a proton- donating solvent. CONSTITUTION:This production of a 1,4-dicyanobutene is carried out by conducting a dimerization reaction of acrylonitrile in the presence of a phosphinite catalyst or a phosphonite catalyst of the formula I or II (R , R and R are an aryl, an alkyl or a cycloalkyl; R , R and R are an aryl, an alkyl or a cycloalkyl) in a proton-donating organic solvent. Especially in the case a phosphinite catalyst or a phosphonite catalyst satisfying R =R in the formula I or II is used as the catalyst, a compound of the formula III, especially a compound of the formula IV (R and R are each an alkyl, etc.; R to R are H, an alkyl, etc.) is recommendably used as the above-mentioned organic solvent. In addition, a substituted bisphenol having substituent groups at least at 3,3',5 and 5' 3positions, especially a compound of formula V (R , R , R and R are each an alkyl, etc.; R to R are H, an alkyl, etc.) is recommendably used as the above-mentioned organic solvent.
