    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an optical fiber whose cross section has an equilateral-(even-number)-gonal or an equilateral-(odd-number)-gonal shape, simply with a consistent diameter.SOLUTION: A method of producing an optical fiber whose cross section is equilateral-(even-number)-gonal shape and comprises: a step of preparing a preform which is provided with a core precursor part and a clad precursor part surrounding the periphery of the core precursor part and has a cross section similar to that of an optical fiber; and a wire drawing step of forming an optical fiber by heating and drawing the preform. In the wire drawing step, the outer diameter of the optical fiber after drawing is measured in two directions with an angle of (180/even number)×n degrees, where n is an odd number and meets the condition 180>(180/even number)×n, in the cross section of the optical fiber, and the diameter of the circumcircle in the cross section of the optical fiber is calculated by using the two types of outer diameters measured in the two directions to control the drawing speed in such a way as to keep the diameter of the circumcircle constant with time.
