    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine wherein reduction of both smoke and NOx can be attained in addition to inhibitions of increase in THC and oil-dilution in a first control mode, an driver's output request is accepted in a second control mode, and a transitory smoke-increase is avoided in a control-mode-switching time. SOLUTION: In the second control mode (normal mode), the output is ensured by setting an ignition timing close to a compression top-dead-center; in the first control mode (low NOx mode), the ignition timing is advanced substantially further than that in the second control mode to raise the upper limit of smoke-suppressible EGR rate, and 36° BTDC is set where an THC increase and an oil-dilution attributable to an excessive advance angle can be prevented; and in switching the control mode, the transitory smoke-increase is prevented by instant switchover of the ignition timing at the excess air-ratio of 1.3.
